Abstract

This article aims to do iconographic analysis of Apollo in the Forge of Vulcan painting by Diego Velázquez. Artist of the brightest of his time, Velázquez constructs a visual narrative from classical texts known to him on his journey to Rome in 1629. That canvas is significant for understanding the space of Painter's time, i.e., the modern era, when virtuoso was sponsored by Spanish State, through the figure of monarch Philip IV, Philip II' grandson. Although the scene is inspired by Greek mythology texts, there are references of his time painted in the image. We intend, as primary goal, divulge Velázquez's pictures beyond the most known. Methodology relies mainly on readings from art experts such as E. H. Gombrich and Jonathan Brown. We follow iconographic analysis model founded by art researcher Erwin Panofsky.
