Abstract

In just over a hundred years of foundation, the Assembly of God has become the largest evangelical church in Brazil. It is understood that the missionary urgency attributed to the Pentecostal movement, the emphasis on divine healing, the relevance of spiritual gifts and the eschatological message, contributed for this denomination to achieve this great growth. It is noted that the adaptability and dynamism of this church was a preponderant factor for the action of spreading the gospel to achieve success in a society permeated by updates in its lifestyle; in this case, the role of secularization stands out, which gradually corroborated detachment from religiosity. Therefore, in the Brazilian context, this religious institution, over time, has played the role of adding social dignity and discursive empowerment, leading many marginalized people to have new social perspectives.
