FREI TITO. MARCAS DA VIOLÊNCIA, MORTE E “JUSTA MEMÓRIA”

Durante a ditadura militar no Brasil (1964-1985), jovens religiosos trocaram o seu ofício de reclusão e oração para lutar em defesa da liberdade e da democracia. Esses jovens que lutaram por um país melhor e uma sociedade mais justa e humana, foram perseguidos, torturados e difamados por conta de suas escolhas políticas. Frei Tito tomou para si a missão de denunciar ao mundo o que ocorria no país e contar a sua história de resistência. A história da vida e da morte de Frei Tito de Alencar permite uma aproximação com a proposta teórica de Paul Ricoeur para se pensar o “dever de memória”. Antes de seu suicídio, Frei Tito deixou vários indícios que sugeriam o significado que seu gesto final deveria assumir. Sua morte, muitas vezes mal interpretada e durante muito tempo silenciada pela historiografia, guarda um sentido maior que merece ser recuperado aqui à luz da noção de “justa memória”.

Abstract:

During the military dictatorship (1964-1985), young clergymen exchanged their seclusion and prayer services to fight for freedom and democracy. These young people who fought for a better country and a more just and humane society were persecuted, tortured and defamed because of their political choices. Friar Tito took on the mission of denouncing what was happening in the country to the world and telling his story of resistance. The history of the life and tragic death of Friar Tito allows for a parallel with the theoretical proposal of Paul Ricoeur to think the "duty of memory". Before his suicide, Friar Tito left several evidences that suggested the meaning of his final gesture. His death, often misinterpreted and long silenced by historiography, holds a greater meaning that deserves to be recovered here in the light of the notion of "just memory".
