OS DESAFIOS PARA A PERMANÊNCIA NO ENSINO SUPERIOR DE ESTUDANTES INDÍGENAS NA UNIVERSIDADE FEDERAL DO TOCANTINS

Este trabalho tem como objetivo descrever e analisar os desafios referentes ao acesso e à permanência de jovens indígenas da etnia Xerente no Ensino Superior no Estado do Tocantins. A presença deles na Educação Superior é emblemática e provoca muitas reflexões. Uma delas é a de evidenciar e, ao mesmo tempo, tentar superar a preconceituosa ideia de que os indígenas são apenas aqueles residentes em aldeias no meio da floresta, conforme ditam os meios de comunicação em massa e ainda os livros didáticos (Baniwa, 2010). A presença dos estudantes indígenas revela a possibilidade de afirmação de sua atuação enquanto sujeitos históricos, epistêmicos e políticos, daí, sua dimensão afirmativa, sendo esta caracterizada, fundamentalmente, numa perspectiva étnico-comunitária (Amaral, 2010). A pesquisa de campo consistiu na realização de entrevistas com jovens da etnia Xerente que estão cursando na Universidade Federal do Tocantins. Nota-se que, apesar de todas as dificuldades por eles enfrentadas, o estudo é motivo de orgulho para eles e para as comunidades indígenas.

Abstract

This paper aims to describe and analyze the challenges related to the access and permanence of Xerente indigenous youths in Higher Education in the State of Tocantins. Their presence is emblematic and causes many reflections. One of them is to highlight and at the same time try to overcome the prejudiced idea that the natives are only those who live in forests, according to mass media and textbooks ( Baniwa,  2010). The presence of indigenous students reveals the possibility of affirming their performance as historical, epistemic and political subjects, hence their affirmative dimension, which is fundamentally characterized from an ethnic-communitarian perspective (Amaral, 2010). The field research is based in interviews with young people of the Xerente ethnic group who are attending Higher Education at the Federal University of Tocantins. It is noted that despite all the difficulties they face, the study is a source of pride for them and the indigenous communities.
